Itineraries

Welcome to Uganda! On arrival, you will be met and greeted at the Airport by a Valiant Safaris driver-guide who will be your driver for the trip, and then transfer to your hotel for check-in. For morning arrivals you may choose to drive straight to the park and stay at the base of the mountain, however you may also choose to stay in Entebbe and relax resting from a long-haul flight.
Start the day with an early breakfast before starting the drive to Kasese and to Nyakalengija at the base on the Rwenzori ranges. You will spend a night at the foothills of the mountains, this will allow you to acclimatize as you contemplate on the trekking challenge that lies ahead! The drive from Entebbe to Kasese is Approx. 372 km and 7 hours.
After breakfast, drive to the trailhead at Nyakalengija 1,615m. get porters, guides and briefing before starting the hike. The initial part of the trail passes through Bakonzo farms, before climbing steeply to Nyabithaba Hut at 2650 metres, set on a forested ridge with good views of Portal Peaks and the Bujuuku Valley. Ensure you keep your wet weather gear with you, some patches along this route are very wet and muddy, you may end up with pretty wet boots in the evening. Ensure your boots are waterproofed, and that you have spare lightweight Shoes to wear in camp this evening, allowing your boots to dry. Take it slow, today you will encounter some steep parts on the climb. The porters walk ahead and sometimes with you - make sure every day, that you have all your personal gear needed with you, as you will not have access to your bag. Conditions are difficult on this route, and your guide/porters will do everything they can to make your climb pleasant and as much comfortable.
Start with a rather steep downhill section where you will cross the confluence of the Bujuuku/Mubuku Rivers at the Kurt Scharfer bridge, after which you steeply ascend through heather and giant groundsel forests to John Matte hut, situated in a grove of giant heather at 3 415 metres. Again, keep your wet weather gear handy, and some snacks for the route. Drink plenty of water. The hut is a spacious one and well worth using, although there are nice spots to pitch your tent if you feel the need. Eat well - at higher levels your appetite will diminish. Learn to pace yourself with your breathing - do not try to rush to catch up with anyone, go at your own, most comfortable speed and you will arrive at camp relatively easily. This day it is advisable to hike in rubber boots (“wellies”), as some parts of the route are very wet and muddy.
Across the two Bigo Bogs as well as the Kibatsi Bog, the “wellies” are a great help here! There are the remains of a causeway of wooden planks across the Kibatsi bog, which is in various states of disrepair at this stage, up to Lake Bujuuku. The shores are muddy, the last obstacle before Bujuuku Hut (3 977 m). Excellent views of Mt. Baker, Mt Speke and Mt. Stanley if the weather is clear.
The trail from Bujuku takes you through more bog, while climbing the steep slopes west of the lake and through the magical and forest of Groundsel Gully. Turn to your right up to Elena Hut and Mount Stanley on a steep trail over large boulders. While the trail on your left leads to Scott-Elliot Pass and down to Kitandara Lakes the trail on he left leads those who are not climbing Margherita Peak to Kitandara Hut. Since on this trek we are aiming the peak! We take the right to the coolly and Icy Elena Hut where we shall have dinner and overnight.
Very early in the morning, you attempt climbing the highest peak, Margherita of Mount Stanley standing at 5,109m asl. To reach the summit of Margherita, the climb takes about 4 -5 hours depending on the weather conditions and the pace of the climbers. This tough walk takes you over three glaciers, slippery rock, ice and very exposed areas which are open on many sides. Climbing on to the glaciers, cross the Stanley Plateau and proceed with the ascent. Acclimatized to fog, altitude sickness and coolly weather, scramble up to the summit of Margherita the highest peak of the Rwenzori. The descend from Margherita peak back to Elena Hut will take you about 2 – 3hours. After your lunch at Elena hut, descend to the Scott-Elliot pass (4372m asl.), where you will have spectacular views of the Bujuku Lake and Mount Speke. continue along the trail through an alpine zone of sparse vegetation and rough boulders, descend past the Kitandara Lakes for dinner and overnight at the Kitandara camp.
A steep climb over the Fresh field Pass (4 282m), before descending to Guy Yeoman Hut, set in the giant heather zone at 3 506 m. It is likely you may experience seizure of joints - particularly knees today - keep a support bandage with you for this descent, and perhaps some anti-inflammatory pills/cream. The Trek is approximately 7 hours.
This morning you’ll start a bit earlier than usual, as you have an extra hour or so for your descent to the gate. A long walk today! A steep descent through the bamboo zone below Guy Yeoman, the route descends the cliffs of Kichuchu. Beyond Kichuchu the muddy path crosses the Mubuku River twice through a bamboo forest before descending to Nyabitaba then complete the circuit at Nyakalengija. since the trek finishes in the evening, you will spend an overnight at the camp. The descent is approximately 8 hours.
You will have a breakfast at the Camp before starting a 7 hours drive back to Entebbe with Lunch en-route. Arrive Entebbe in time to check in for your evening departure

Itineraries

Arriving at the airport, you will be warmly welcomed by a representative of Gorilla Link Tours, and transferred to your hotel in Kampala. Optional Activities: City Tour: Depending on the time of your arrival, explore the vibrant and chaotic city of Kampala. Discover historical and political sites including the ancient tombs of the Kabakas, where the Buganda tribe laid their kings to rest or the Bahai Temple, etc. Eat Out: Kampala is a town full of culinary wonders. Stray out from your hotel to taste some of the eclectic cuisine of the region including Kampala’s delicious Indian food.
Today after an early breakfast, your guide will come to your hotel to brief you about the safari and will transfer you to Fort Portal, close to Kibale National park. The drive is incredibly scenic, passing through villages, lush green forests and hills dotted with tea plantations. You will stay at a wonderful lodge, just outside Fort Portal town, with spacious rooms and amazing views over one of the crater lakes in this area.
Today you will wake up early to go to the park head offices to be briefed about your chimp tracking experience. Kibale Forest National Park boasts the highest number of primate species in the world, including the chimpanzees. Approximately 5,000 chimpanzees live in the wild in Uganda, which makes it a perfect place to see them. An experienced ranger will take you chimp tracking in the morning or afternoon; you might also see other monkey species that live here. Once you locate the chimpanzees, you will have a full hour of eye-to-eye contact with them. Since they are wild animals, we can never guarantee you to see them and might have to settle with hearing their hoots and hollers. In the afternoon after lunch, you will go for the guided swamp walk. The walk (2-3 hours) will take you through grassland, small communities and some beautiful scenery, where the locals are likely to greet you with enthusiastic waves.
After breakfast, your guide will drive you to Queen Elizabeth National Park, home to a high concentration of Uganda’s mammals that include tree climbing and savannah lions, elephants, warthogs, Uganda kobs, waterbucks, Cape buffalo, hippos and leopards. There are also more than 600 species of birds that include the African spoonbill, pied kingfishers, fish eagles, pelicans, and vultures. Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda’s second-largest park, located at the base of the majestic Rwenzori Mountain Range, adjacent to Lake Edward and Lake George. Lions are often sighted both in and at the entrance to the park. Be ready to see huge numbers of hippos and elephants, and keep your eyes on the lookout for a leopard lazing in the sunshine. In the late afternoon, you will relax at the lodge. Your overnight stay will be at the beautiful Mweya Safari Lodge, located in the heart of Queen Elizabeth National Park on the Mweya Peninsula.
Today you'll wake up early. A little before sunrise, coffee, tea and donuts will be served in the lounge before we head out for a long game drive in time to see the first rays of light. You will search for all the wildlife in the park and are likely to come across elephants, buffalo, lions, waterbucks, leopards, Uganda kobs, and many warthogs. A well-deserved brunch will be served back at the lodge late in the morning. In the afternoon, you will take a boat safari along the Kazinga Channel which joins Lake George and Lake Edward. Here, you will see a lot of hippos (more than you can possibly imagine) as well as a variety of other animals which come to the waterhole to drink or bathe. You can expect to see buffalo, crocodile, bathing elephant, and a range of beautiful birds. This will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of your tour.
After breakfast, you will proceed to the southern part of Queen Elizabeth National Park, the famous Ishasha area, for a game drive searching for the tree-climbing lions. Ishasha is home to the famous tree-climbing lions. While lion cubs around the world frequently climb trees for fun, adults rarely do. The adult lions in Ishasha are an exception to this. It is thought that they sit in the branches to get away from the tsetse flies and to enjoy a cool breeze. If you are lucky, you might spot a few during your game drive. Lunch will be at Ishasha Wilderness Camp in Ishasha. After lunch, you will be transferred to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, home to mountain gorillas. You will get there in time for dinner and your overnight stay.
Today after early breakfast, you will be transferred to the park headquarters for a briefing about gorilla tracking. You will encounter one of Bwindi’s endangered mountain gorillas. For most people, this is the absolute highlight of their tour in Uganda. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park boasts both mountain gorillas and chimpanzees—the only forest in Africa that can make this claim. It also hosts five other species of primates, 113 species of mammals, over 200 species of butterflies and 360 species of birds. The gorillas you track are habituated and can tolerate the presence of humans for a brief period of time, every day. The time taken to track the gorillas can be as few as 2 hours to as many as 7 hours. Once the gorillas have been located, your group will be allowed a maximum of one hour with them. Coming face-to-face with a mountain gorilla is a truly humbling and emotional experience.
After breakfast at the lodge, you will drive back to Entebbe Airport. As you pass through the equator, there will be a stop for the requisite snapshot and a bit of souvenir shopping.

Lake Katwe, which is situated just north of the impressive Mweya peninsula, is far too salty to support any wildlife. However, since the 16th Century, it has ensured the survival of the Katwe residents, who spend their days under the equatorial sun harvesting salt from its milky waters. Later, you'll return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
After an early breakfast, your guide will take you on a game drive to the northern sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park through the Kasenyi track in search of lions, hyenas, buffaloes, leopards, water bucks, bush bucks, Uganda kob plus many bird species including ibis, fish eagles and vultures. In the afternoon, you will embark on a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel a major highlight of your safari. On the boat cruise, you will have the opportunity to view great numbers of wildlife including elephants, crocodiles, hippos, buffaloes and large numbers of birds like eagles, kingfishers, sparrows, doves, weaver birds, eaglets and sun birds converging at the channel waters to enjoy a sip of the natural waters.
The drive, which will serve as your morning game drive will last between 3-4 hours. Have your eyes peeled for more game. On arrival in the Ishasha Sector, you will search for the famous and unique tree-climbing lions. There are about 4 prides of lions in the area numbering more than 40 in total. Look out for the males with their black mane, which is a notable attribute. Also, there are about 1000+ elephants present in the area and you normally see large numbers. There are topi (savannah relatives of the world-famous wildebeests) and Uganda kob antelopes in large numbers. The drive is a fantastic opportunity to take lots of pictures. On arrival, you will go on a search for the area’s famous residents. At the right time, you will exit the park and continue to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
You will have an early breakfast and transfer to the briefing point. With a packed lunch in your carry-on, you'll listen to the briefing from the rangers on what to expect before commencing your trek. The guides will then take you through the bush, pushing your way through the undergrowth, looking for where the family of gorillas you are tracking spent the night. When you finally locate the family that you are tracking, you'll sit in the forest among the gorillas, watching them go about their day, and marvel at the dominant male, the silverback. It is an extraordinary feeling sitting in the dense rainforest in the knowledge that you are in the presence of the few remaining mountain gorillas in the wild. After the mandatory 1 hour is up, the rangers and guides will lead you back to the trailhead where your driver/guide will be waiting. You will receive your certificate and transfer to Lake Bunyonyi.
This morning, you will wake up at leisure and enjoy your breakfast, drive to Lake Mburo National Park. You will make a lunch stop in Mbarara town before continuing to Lake Mburo. On arrival, you will go straight for a game drive to see what this small park has to offer. Lake Mburo National Park is the only park in Uganda with impalas, antelopes and Burchell’s Zebra. You are also on the lookout for elands, giraffes and a lot more. The scenery of rolling hills, lakes, and swamps make Africa real, and it is in Lake Mburo where the Tanzanian savannah meets Uganda in a most scenic fashion.
You will wake up and enjoy breakfast. Lake Mburo National Park is one of two game parks in Uganda where visitors are allowed to go for a bush nature walk with an experienced ranger. On a morning guided walk, you will often encounter hyenas who are returning to their dens after a night of being on the prowl. At the same time, you can often see hippos returning from grazing during the night and returning to the lake to keep cool during the day and protect their sensitive skin from the sun. On a nature walk, you will often see zebras, giraffes, elands, topi, antelopes, buffaloes, birds, and butterflies. After your walk, you will return to the lodge, take a shower and check out ready for the drive to Entebbe. At the Equator crossing, you'll take some fun pictures and purchase crafts from your Uganda safari. You will enjoy lunch at the Equator and continue to Entebbe.
